We have come through the pressure of examinations, evaluations, admissions, and the immediate Dashain festival. The time ahead, with the post-festival zeal in all of us, has the potential to mark a productive continuation of our scholarly pursuits. The KUFIT team wish that our little effort in bringing out interdisciplinary discourses will meet with greater enthusiasm for contribution from the University’s intellectual community.

The articles in KUFIT have come from the authors who have always been very eager to contribute and are accessible to the team. This platform, nevertheless, is open for all faculties of KU. So, as always, we invite our readers to send us writings on diverse areas of interest. We also expect your active participation in the interdisciplinary discourse that we aim to enhance.

It takes much shorter time to dismiss several good ideas than to generate one. Indifference is more discouraging than dismissal. KUFIT team’s principal concern lies in ensuring that we serve strictly academic and professional purposes, and that our genuine efforts are neither dismissed nor regarded with indifference and mistrust. Our professional, or rather emotional, security lies in our sense of being surrounded by committed, competent and enthusiastic academics. Thus, we sustain the zeal for interdisciplinary discourses and would like to thank all our contributors for their timely participation.

There should be no need to clarify that we have no mission to seek sheer name and recognition above our present positions. Since our goal is to share knowledge, rooted in the realization that positive learning transcends every worldly preoccupation against the thirst for digging gold, our work rises above any show of indifference or mistrust. Our determination to continue is a reward in itself. KUFIT embodies the desire to establish a discourse community in Kathmandu University, a community where one speaks beyond his disciplinary coterie as/to human beings who might have taken different professional routes but bear the identical perceptions of what goes around.

We have always expected only one scholarly attitude from our colleagues – the readiness to own and augment professional conversations, the zeal to tell others how ideas work where we belong and how these ideas might benefit those who do not belong. Please be a part of KUFIT sending us posts and observations, and promoting a culture of mutual growth.

KU academics are amid the pressure of internal evaluation and preparation for end-semester examinations. Thus this issue of KUFIT has had fewer posts. But our commitment for bringing out quality writings continues. As the fourth month ensues, we feel to have grown, with a substantial collection of thoughtful writings. We are working to mature — with a rich interdisciplinary archive in a year, and still ahead.

We invite genuine feedback and contributions from our colleagues. And we repeatedly say: Let us promote the culture of professional sharing. It only takes our willingness to communicate. It only takes the readiness to communicate more and more.

To many, teaching appears complacent job – complacent because a teacher does not necessarily seem to fall headlong into destructive vicissitudes. Because is teacher, working with mind and heart, skips being visible like society militant muscle users. Positively, this still because teaching is accepted as fundamental to social progress and their teacher principal agents for augmenting and sustaining progress. And in reality teachers manage to live leisurely and contented life despite hours/years of hard work while at world around the falls into upheavals. But, are lives without challenges behind this veil of complacence?

Teaching involves the need to sustain productive challenge, the challenge to constantly update and updated. It challenge to exist as long as the urge for learning exists. It equally to supply the society with progressive, inquisitive work force, who would work towards brighter future from among the present pessimistic crowd. We in KU feel this urge even more; we feel at responsibilities as pressing the achievements relatively more distant. But we closely watch our hard work being rewarded with the successes of our students. We believe that persistence proves, these main motivation for students. We work to keep values intact, while upgrading ourselves and consolidating our goals at time many things are falling out of place in country.

We would like dedicate KUFIT the teachers who share the motivation to sustain the challenges for building better tomorrow. This issue contains reflections on pertinent social topics, teachers’ intimate narratives, and cases from Nepali history. Finally, as arrive then second issue of KUFIT, we feel strong urge ask colleagues and readers visit the site, read the articles, initiate discussions and plan for contributions in months.

The academia signifies the convergence of manifold creative and critical minds. But, sometimes, because disciplines naturally demand diversity of works and schedules, scholars have to be segmented in different academic corners. At the same time, in absence of a plea to come together for common discourses and expansion of knowledge, and because our disciplinary priorities (and sometimes biases) and personal inclinations are so intense, we let our collective potentials atrophy in divergence. Such can be the case in our own place.With physical expansion and inflow of a larger number of academics, KU has turned from the family-like structure of the initial days into a larger community where regular personal contacts and collective work are becoming literally difficult. Hence the significance of an interdisciplinary online platform like Forum for Interdisciplinary Thoughts, KU (KUFIT).

KUFIT comprises a group of academic enthusiasts who promise to represent a motivation for growth by unifying our rational efforts. We will try to think more like scholars and intellectuals than experts of particular disciplines.
